Less Lethal Force in Your Crime Plot

DISCLAIMER - This is a non-political site that is geared to help writers write it right. I am presenting information to help develop fictional characters and fictional scenes. In no way am I advocating any position or personal decision.

Do you have a scene of unrest in your plot?

Do you need your military or your police to intervene without using bullets and grenades?

You have some options you could write into your scene.

Pepper spray - I did a whole blog article on this one. You'll find it HERE.

But did you know there is also a "Pepper Ball Gun"?

  • Up to 10 yards
  • 180 rounds
  • air gun deployment
  • Made of plastics that break open upon impact
  • Irritants, just like in pepper spray, are meant to incapacitate
  • Sometimes, like pepper spray, they will include dye for identification
  • If you've ever played paint ball I'm told that's an equivalent feeling.
  • DO NOT fire at head or neck or it can be lethal

Stepping it up? Tear Gas

  • Is not a gas but a powder that is mixed with a liquid and aerosolized.
  • Two types
    • CS - chlorobenzalmalononitrile
    • CN - chloroacetophenone
  • Shot from a launcher
  • 4-6 rounds
  • 50 yards
  • Gas is released for 20 seconds

Prefer a projectile to a chemical? Use a  Bean Bag Round

  • Use on people who are causing a danger
  • Fabric sack filled with lead shot
  • Fired from a shotgun
  • 20 yards
  • The sack expands as it flies from gun to target to increase harm
  • Is supposed to cause muscle spasms without breaking the skin
  • DO NOT fire at head or neck or it can be lethal

More? Go with Sponge Grenades

  • Use to stop violent aggression
  • Cause blunt force trauma
  • Approximately 10 yards
  • Temporarily disabling
  • DO NOT shoot at head, neck, or groin
  • Designed to be shot at a distance
  • Using them too close can result in serious injury

Then there are Rubber Bullets
Warning: graphic images of damage

Hopefully, your characters get home safely.

Be well,
Fiona
