Many of my books feature Marine Raiders -- like my book Instigator. (If you'd like to read it - here's the link) And I thought it would be fun to share a drink from their special culture that I've found through my research:
FISH HOUSE PUNCH
Recipe First:
As an individual cocktail:
Fill a shaker with ice
2 oz Golden rum
2 oz. Peach brandy
1 oz Cognac
1/2 oz simple syrup
Juice of 1 lemon and 1 lime
Shake
Serve with its ice in a tall glass and garnish.
As a punch:
1 cup sugar
3 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice (about 8 lemons), strained.
1 (750-ml) bottle golden rum
1 1/2 c Cognac
1/4 c peach brandy
Put it in a milk jug you've emptied and washed thoroughly and shake it until the sugar dissolves (or use simple syrup that you made with a cup of sugar). Pour over a punch bowl of ice. (Or a pretty ice wreath, if you like)
Now the story
According to my research this cocktail has been a part of the Marine culture for over 200 years.
200 years ago fishing ports would have been great places to get hold of rum and citrus fruits being brought up from the Caribbean.
At that time, it became a favorite with the Continental Marines, and has remained part of their celebrations ever since.
Enjoy!
Fiona
